Land Management -- Shaker Trace Seed Nursery

Shaker Trace Seed Nursery
The Shaker Trace Seed Nursery was created in the spring of 1992 for the
sole purpose of producing native prairie and wetland seed for a
restoration project of several hundred acres at Miami Whitewater Forest.
In 1991 seed was collected from remnant sites within 100 mile of
Hamilton County to maintain native genotype. Seedlings are
hand-raised, thanks in large part to a group of dedicated volunteers.

The Shaker Trace Seed Nursery deals with over 150 different species
of native plants. Once an area is chosen for planting, the site is
evaluated and the species to be planted are determined based on soil
type, slope, amount of sun or shade and seed availability. A seed drill is
used to plant seed just under the surface of the soil, and no more than
1/2 inch deep. Good seed to soil contact is important but, planting
seed too deep can cause your planting to fail. It will take three to five
years, depending on the soil type, to produce diversity.
