Education

The University of the Great Outdoors (UGO) is a new initiative by the Hamilton County Park District Naturalist Department to encourage health and nature appreciation in the Great Outdoors. Throughout the year, UGO programs will be offered at various parks with an emphasis on outdoor exercise and nutrition. The programs are designed to be fun and educational! Experience recreation in nature!

OCTOBER 21
Afterschool Archery / 5:00pm

Winton Woods
Join a certified archery instructor to learn some tips, tricks and information about the compound bow. You can then try out your archery skills with a little target practice! Ages eight to adult. Cost is $10 and the deadline to register is October 4.

OCTOBER 26
Fall Day Hike / 9:00am - 3:00pm

Miami Whitewater Forest
Explore the park on this Naturalist-led hike. We will take breaks along the way, including a rest for lunch. Bring a bag lunch, snacks and a water bottle. Water will be provided to refill your bottle. We’ll cover five to seven miles. Sturdy shoes will be needed as we will be encountering some rugged and hilly areas on paved and unpaved trails. Deadline to register is October 20. Register online.

NOVEMBER 1
Outdoor Sampler / 10:00am - 4:00pm

Winton Woods Adventure Outpost
Trained staff will guide you in learning outdoor skills such as archery, wilderness first aid, basic compass skills, campfire cooking and try our climbing wall in this day long event. You will even prepare your lunch over an open fire. Recommended for ages 12 to adult. Cost is $30 and the deadline to register is October 28. Register online.

NOVEMBER 4

Get Fit Fall Hike / 10:00am

Winton Wood Parcours Trail
We’ll walk the picturesque Parcours Trail, which has a lush pine forest, a creek valley and deciduous woodland. The Parcours also has exercise stations and we will pick a few to do along the way to help us get fit. We will walk 1.1 miles.

NOVEMBER 29
Burn Off The Bird Hike! / 2:00pm

Miami Whitewater Forest Badland Trail
Join us as we walk off all of those calories by exploring the trails of Miami Whitewater Forest. You can choose to walk for one or more trails totaling 1.4 to 4 miles!

NOVEMBER 29
Carb-Buster Hike / 2:00pm

Winton Woods Winton Centre
Join this three-mile hike and get a good start to burning off all of those Thanksgiving carbs. The outdoors is the best place to exercise. We’ll set a good pace and learn a few interesting natural features along the way, keeping an eye out for wildlife too.
