Maple Sugaring For Schools and Scouts
Learn about the science, tools, techniques and tastes associated with the sweet tradition of maple sugaring. School sessions are offered at Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve on February 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24 and 25, as well as March 2, 3, 4 and 5 at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Scout groups may attend at 3:30 p.m. on February 16, 17, 18, 23 and 24 as well as March 3 and 4.

Nature's Babies
Preschool and kindergarten classes learn about animal babies, animal parents, and their homes. Registration must be received by 10 days prior to the program. Session are offered at Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve on March 16, 17, 18, 23 and 24 at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Additional sessions are offered at Fernbank Park on March 25, 29 and 31 at 12:15 p.m. Register online.
Vernal Ponds 101
Teachers, register your sixth through twelfth grade students to learn about one of the most biologically diverse habitats -- vernal ponds! These small ponds hold water for only part of the year but have an incredible variety of amphibian, reptile, insect and arthropodic life. Each class will receive two copies of A Field Guide to the Animals of Vernal Pools, as well as a poster and other literature. The start time and the length of program are flexible to meet the needs of your school. You will need a bus or other transportation to remain with your group in order to transport students to and from the pond site. Teachers’ Workshop: Vermicomposting
Teachers, here’s a great workshop to help you understand the benefits of composting. Learn how to turn veggie trimmings into precious compost with the assistance of a few hundred worms and lessen the strain on local landfills by reducing your garbage output. You will create and take home a healthy worm bin complete with bedding, materials, food and of course – worms! This bin can move into your classroom and be a great teaching tool for students of any age. Be sure to dress for hands-on activities. This workshop takes place at Glenwood Gardens on Thursday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $19.00. Register online.
Archery Merit Badge
Scouts are invited to register for this session at Winton Woods to work towards earning their Archery Badge using compound bows. The program takes place on Thursday, April 8 at 5 p.m. The cost is $15.00 per participant. Register online.
Cycling Merit Badge
Scouts are invited to register to work towards earning their Cycling Badge on Thursday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at Winton Woods. Bicycles are required and helmets are strongly recommended. One adult per five scouts required. Register online.
Archaeology
This is an opportunity for students in grades three to eight to spend all day at Shawnee Lookout studying prehistoric occupation of the middle Ohio Valley. We will hike along the 1.5 mile Miami Fort Trail, visit the archaeology exhibits, participate in a re-created excavation and more. Groups may be scheduled for this 4.5 hour program beginning as early as 8:30 a.m. and ending as late as 3 p.m. Registration must be received by 10 days prior to the program. You must provide transportation throughout the day as well as lunch and drinks. Sessions can be scheduled on April 13-16, April 19, April 21-23 and April 26-30. Register online.
Fabulous Frogs and Toads
These returning theme programs for schools are designed for kindergarten through grade two classes. Bring your children to learn about all about the lives of local frogs and toads at Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve. The 1 hour and 45 minute program will include a short audio-visual presentation, hike, live animal presentation, a learning game and a fun frog craft. Sessions are available on May 6, May 10-12 and May 14 at 12:15 p.m.
