Lesson of the Month - March 2008
Proper Practice
Most people spend 80% of their practice time hitting shots with a 7-iron or longer. Great way to tire yourself out, especially when you start your practice session with your driver and you proceed to hit 75% of that large bucket with one club!
Unfortunately, when you take your game to the course you only use your 7- iron or longer clubs about 30% of the time during your round of golf. That being the case, I encourage my students to spend 80% of your practice time hitting shots from inside 100 yards.
I call one of my most popular drills the “10 from 10 to 100” drill. Begin with pacing 10 yards off the green and hitting 10 shots from that spot. Pay particular attention to the spot where the ball lands and rolls out! After 10 balls pace off another 10 yards and repeat the drill. Continue to move back 10 yards until you reach 100 yards shots. The mechanics of the pitching swing are very similar to your full swing, especially when you get to 50 yards and beyond. Players that do this drill on a regular basis will begin to feel the swing length and speed to propel the ball in these 10 yard increments.
It is amazing how the ball striking ability improves across all clubs once you begin to understand and execute your 100 yards and in ‘scoring shots’.
If you want your practice to be productive and you desire your scores to improve; try my “10 from 10 to 100” drill!
Good luck for the 2008 Golf Season and Visit one of our 7 great golf courses throughout the Hamilton County Park District!
